The original John Varvatos EDT is a bold, dark, and richly complex leather-oriental — a fragrance that feels genuinely artisanal and unconventional for a designer release. It weaves together leather, oud, amber, tamarind, dates, balsam fir, vanilla, olibanum, caramel, hay, herbal notes, and styrax into a smoky, sweet, animalic whole that is simultaneously earthy, warm, and deeply intriguing. Tart tamarind and sticky dates open with a sweet-sour fruitiness, while balsam fir and herbal notes add a cool, resinous green quality. The leather and oud core is dark and slightly smoky, softened by caramel, vanilla, and hay into something surprisingly wearable. Styrax and olibanum round out the base with a warm, balsamic incense quality that lingers with excellent depth and longevity.
